Medication-based support and psychiatric care for addiction treatment

In the treatment of addiction, a psychiatric evaluation is a key step. Medication-based support may be necessary, particularly during the initial detoxificationphase.

Personalized medication-based treatment

At the European Institute for Addiction, individuals have access to specialized psychiatric consultations with clinicians experienced in the treatment of substance-related and behavioral addictions, and may receive individualized medication-based treatments when clinically indicated.

Psychiatric assessment in the context of addiction: when and why is it necessary?

At IEuD, our patients always undergo an evaluation with one of our psychiatrists specialized in addiction medicine as part of the multidisciplinary diagnostic process. This evaluation is necessary because some symptoms associated with substance use may be related to use itself (such as mood changes, anxiety, or sleep disturbances) or may point to the presence of additional mental health conditions (for example, depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, etc.).

The physician assesses the individual’s overall condition and, if appropriate, may recommend medication as part of an integrated care plan alongside other therapies (such as psychotherapy, TMS, and family support).

Medication-based treatment for addiction

Medications used in addiction treatment are selected based on the type of substance involved and the individual's clinical situation. They can be used to:

Reduce craving;

Stabilize mood;

Encourage abstinence;

Improve sleep and emotional regulation;

Prevent relapses.

Each prescription is discussed and agreed upon with the patient, tailored to the individual situation and tolerability, and integrated into and monitored as part of the overall treatment program.

An integrated medical approach

When appropriate, medication-based therapy may be part of a broader range of services.

This approach ensures comprehensive, individualized care, aimed at supporting stability and maintaining results over time. Medication-based treatment may also be accompanied by ongoing monitoring, periodic reassessments, and, when necessary, family support and counseling.
